Cheltenham Film Society

2009/2010 64th Season

What about the social side? ...

We aim to create a friendly relaxed environment where all our members will feel comfortable.  To that end we hold several (optional) social events after films - at the beginning and end of the season and at Christmas.

Age of Stupid

We had a good discussion after the film on 6 Nov, which was attended by around 150 people, both film soc and members of the public. Unfortunately Cathy Green could not make it but we did have an addition to the exhibitor list with Cheltenham Connect Go Green. Many thanks to all who gave their time to supprt this event.

Stephen's Selection

These films are being shown in the Cheltenham area and are recommended as 'definitely worth seeing' by Stephen, our resident film buff and committee member.

If you do get to see any of them, please send us an e-mail with your views about the film, the venue, anything we can learn to help improve the society.  Also let us know if you hear of other films we should include here.

Happy viewing!

Viviane's Sandwich Recipes!

All who have been to the society's social events will know that our wine and cheese evenings are almost reason enough to join the society without staying to watch the films!  This is because of the magnificent spread put together by our Viviane.  Following many requests from members, she has agreed to part with a few of her secrets and share some of her sandwich recipes.

1. Egg Crunch

Bread:
• Warburton's Stoneground
• Wholemeal, medium sliced

Filling:
• Soft butter or Flora
• Eggs - hard boiled, chopped fine
• Celery - chopped
• Mixed peppers (red, yellow, green) - chopped
• Light Mayonnaise - any
• Salt, Pepper

Depending on quantity of sandwiches required, gauge how many eggs to boil and quantity of celery and peppers to use. Same goes for mayo, salt and pepper.

Mix filling well and spread lightly on you buttered bread Sandwich two slices together and serve Et voila!

2. Salmon

Bread:
• Warburton's medium sliced white loaf

Filling:
• Pink or Red John West Salmon
• Finely chopped Spring Onions
• Light Mayonnaise
• Pepper

Gauge quantity by eye, as required. Mix well with a fork. Spread on your buttered bread. Sandwich two slices together and serve.

Bon Appetit!

3. Tuna

For non-onion eaters, Viv recommends her tuna sandwiches.
Buy tuna in brine.
Drain brine, then mix the tuna with small quantities of corn (from a tin also) and fresh rocket (or rucola as Italians call it).

Add some light mayo if liked, and ecco (Italian for voila!) you have the perfect sandwich!

4. Ham and cucumber
or ham and light cream cheese or just ham.

Also recommended is the 'ham medley' sandwich, a variety of which was served on the last film night this year. But the piece de resistance ham sandwich, which members loved, was the ham accompanied by a chutney with a difference! Bought from M & S, it is their black olive and sundried tomato chutney.

Will go well with cheese too!!!

60th Anniversary
Last Night treats

We had 18 different cheeses on offer. Most of these were English cheeses with new, exciting flavours, plus several French, Italian, Dutch and German. Somewhere in there might have been a Danish one as well!!! As far as the sandwiches were concerned, we had a veritable feast. In addition to old favourites such as Egg Crunch and Salmon with Spring Onions, we had one or two newcomers.

These were:
1. Ham with 'Light' cream cheese and garlic
2. Cucumber and 'Light' cream cheese and garlic
3. Home roasted turkey with tomato and black olive chutney

All mayo used these days is of the 'light' variety.
Other things on offer were ....
Vegetable Samosas, Baby pork pies with mustard and Scotch eggs with bacon.

British Cheese Special

Eleven cheeses all produced here, to celebrate the grand opening of our 06/07 season..... with a Danish film!!!
So, here's the list as it comes ....

- Wensleydale with Cranberries
- White Stilton with Apricots
- Y-Fenni Welsh Cheese with Garlic
- Hunstman Cheese Shropshire Blue
- Blue Stilton Double Gloucester Red
- Leicester White Stilton with Mango and Ginger Sage Derby
- Somerset Brie

And not a hint of Cheddar please note, except possibly in one variety of sandwich!!!
